Izumi Kyoka Memorial Museum: Special Exhibition "The Illustrators of Kyoka's Books"
Source:Kanazawa City
In April 2026, the Izumi Kyoka Memorial Museum in Kanazawa City will be hosting a special exhibition dedicated to the art of book design.
Izumi Kyoka was a novelist born in Kanazawa who was active in Japan from the late 19th century through the first half of the 20th century. His books are renowned for their beautiful cover designs, adorned with illustrations by many painters who were active during the same era.
This special exhibition features a rich collection of retro yet modern book design artwork from the first half of the 20th century. Visitors can also view a recreated display of Izumi Kyoka's personal room.
The museum itself is housed in a beautifully elegant, old-fashioned building, and when I visited, it was wonderfully quiet, allowing for a leisurely viewing experience. As you take in the retro illustrations from the early 20th century, Izumi Kyoka's personal room, and the items he collected, you are sure to feel as though you have taken a time trip back to Japan a hundred years ago.

At the popular 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, located in Kanazawa City, the exhibition "Collection Exhibition 3: Déjà vu" is being held in April 2026.
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa is a museum that displays a large number of contemporary artworks from Japan and around the world. Located near Kanazawa Castle Park in the heart of Kanazawa City, it has become popular for its hands-on, experiential art installations.
This exhibition, themed around the concept of déjà vu, offers visitors a diverse range of artistic styles to enjoy, including paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, and video works. When I visited, a video work utilizing AI was particularly impressive, offering a fresh and cutting-edge artistic experience.

Enjoy "Hanami," the Beloved Spring Kanazawa Event April 2026
If you are visiting Kanazawa in April 2026, make sure to enjoy "hanami," one of the most beloved spring events in Japan.
The cherry blossom — a flower that symbolizes Japanese culture — blooms across the entire country every spring. During the one to two weeks that the flowers are in bloom, people head out to see the blossoms, celebrate the arrival of spring, and take in their breathtaking beauty. This tradition is known as "hanami," and it is one of Japan's most cherished spring events.
The timing of cherry blossom season varies depending on the variety and region, but late March to early April is typical. In Kanazawa, many spots reach their peak bloom during this period as well.
With its wealth of historic architecture, Kanazawa offers the unique pleasure of viewing cherry blossoms alongside ancient buildings and traditional gardens. Be sure to visit some of the most popular hanami spots and enjoy the graceful scenery that can only be seen at this special time of year.
3 Must-See Cherry Blossom Spots in Kanazawa, Famous Across Japan
Kanazawa Castle Park

If you visit Kanazawa in April, the cherry blossoms at Kanazawa Castle Park are an absolute must.
Kanazawa Castle Park is a lush, nature-filled park located in the heart of Kanazawa City. It is home to Kanazawa Castle, a historic castle built in the 16th century, and sits adjacent to the renowned Japanese garden Kenrokuen Garden.
The park features approximately 400 cherry trees, predominantly Somei Yoshino. Throughout its expansive grounds, you can enjoy blossoms from a variety of vantage points. My personal recommendation is viewing the cherry blossoms around Ishikawa Gate.
Built in the 18th century, Ishikawa Gate is a beautifully historic castle gate and has been designated an Important Cultural Property. Seeing it in April alongside fully bloomed cherry blossoms brings out the timeless elegance of the gate even more.
On the day I visited, there was no wind, so I was also able to enjoy the reflection of the blossoms on the surface of the moat. Take your time strolling through the park and find your own favorite spot to enjoy the flowers.
Typical peak bloom: Early to mid-April
Access: Get off at the Kanazawa Castle Park (Ishikawa Gate)/Kenrokuen (Katsurazaka Exit) bus stop
Admission: Free entry to the park (fee required to tour the castle)

Kenroku-en

Kenroku-en, counted among the Three Great Gardens of Japan, is another spot where you can enjoy stunning cherry blossoms.
Kenroku-en is a traditional Japanese garden spread across a vast area. Created over hundreds of years, the garden is beautifully arranged with seasonal flowers and trees, large ponds, and scenic walking paths. Its beauty is famous throughout Japan, and it stands as one of Kanazawa's most iconic landmarks.
Kenroku-en is home to over 40 varieties of cherry trees — including Somei Yoshino and Higan cherry — totaling approximately 400 trees. What I especially recommend is seeing the cherry blossoms illuminated at night. In early April, when the blossoms are at their peak and the nighttime light-up event is held, admission to Kenroku-en is typically free.
The sight of the illuminated blossoms reflected perfectly on the surface of the pond is incredibly elegant and almost dreamlike. If you visit Kanazawa in April, this is a view you simply must not miss.
If you visit during the day, you can also pick up some traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi) at one of the teahouses within the garden and enjoy them leisurely while taking in the blossoms.
Schedule: April 2 to April 13, 2025 (during peak bloom and free admission period) — 2026 dates are yet to be announced
Access: Get off at the Kanazawa Castle Park (Ishikawa Gate)/Kenrokuen (Katsurazaka Exit) bus stop
Admission: Free for a limited period

Mount Utatsu

Mount Utatsu, located within Kanazawa City, is another well-known destination for enjoying cherry blossoms in Kanazawa.
Mount Utatsu is a small mountain standing at 141 meters above sea level, featuring a well-maintained nature park and observation decks. It is accessible on foot from central Kanazawa and is beloved by locals as an easy spot to enjoy nature.
In April, approximately 500 cherry trees bloom beautifully across the mountain. In the Four-Hundred-Year Forest within Utatsuyama Park, located on the mountainside, you can enjoy around 250 cherry trees. Easy-to-walk trails are well maintained throughout, so you can stroll at a leisurely pace while taking in the blossoms.
If you make your way up to the observation deck at the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of Kanazawa City alongside the mountain's cherry blossoms. When I visited, the weather was clear and I could even see the Sea of Japan sparkling in the distance.
For those who want to enjoy cherry blossoms in a nature-rich setting within Kanazawa City, this spot is well worth the trip.
Peak bloom: Typically early to mid-April
Access: Approximately 1 minute walk from the Hokuriku Railroad Bus "Bokodai" bus stop

Hidden Gems for Beautiful Cherry Blossoms, as Recommended by Locals
Here are three hanami spots that only locals tend to know about. Enjoy the beautiful cherry blossoms at these quiet, off-the-beaten-path locations — a refreshing change from the crowds at Kanazawa Castle Park and Kenroku-en.
Kanazawa Municipal Athletic Field
Source:Kanazawa Tourism Official
Kanazawa Municipal Athletic Field is a local stadium used by students and for sports events in Kanazawa.
Approximately 110 cherry trees are planted around the perimeter of the stadium, and in April they burst into bloom all at once with vibrant pink flowers. The spectacular display has quietly earned it a reputation as a hidden cherry blossom gem.
Normally a paid facility reserved for sports activities, the grounds are opened to the public free of charge during cherry blossom season so that residents and visitors alike can enjoy the blossoms.
In Japan, it is a traditional hanami custom to eat and drink beneath the cherry trees while enjoying the flowers. You are welcome to bring light food and drinks into Kanazawa Municipal Athletic Field, so you can relax on the wide grounds, enjoy the blossoms, and have a leisurely meal.
Please note, however, that alcohol is not permitted on the premises.
Peak bloom: Typically late March to early April
Access: Approximately 7 minutes walk from the Hokuriku Railroad bus stop "Kamiarimatsu"
Admission: Free

Fushimi River
Source:Google Maps
Fushimi River is another hidden cherry blossom gem located in Kanazawa City.
Along the banks of Fushimi River, which flows through the western part of Kanazawa City, many cherry trees have been planted. The riverside is beautifully maintained, with embankment walking paths and tree-lined promenades stretching for several kilometers.
In some sections, the cherry trees are planted lower than the embankment, allowing you to see the blooming branches up close at eye level.
When I walked along the river last April, there were particularly many cherry trees on both banks near Kobu Bridge, all in full bloom at once — it was absolutely stunning. Since it is away from the center of Kanazawa City, there were few other visitors, and I was able to enjoy a quiet, peaceful stroll beneath the blossoms.
If you want to enjoy cherry blossoms in a calm and unhurried setting within Kanazawa, a walk along Fushimi River is highly recommended.
Peak bloom: Typically late March to early April
Access: 11 minutes walk from the "Kofu Minami" bus stop

Shishiku Highland
Source:Google Maps
If you are planning to visit the Hakusan City area in April, be sure to stop by Shishiku Highland and enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom.
Shishiku Highland is a highland located in Hakusan City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The famous Shirayama Hime Jinja Shrine, one of Kanazawa's most renowned shrines, is located just nearby.
Taking the gondola to the summit, you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the vast Kaga Plain, where Kanazawa City is also situated.
At Park Shishiku, a leisure area near the gondola station, you can enjoy a rich natural highland setting alongside a variety of cherry blossom species such as Somei Yoshino and Yaezakura.
Riding the gondola up to the 650-meter summit for paragliding is also a popular activity. In April, you can take in the stunning view of pink cherry blossoms spreading out below you as you glide through the sky.

Kaga Hyakumangoku Walk is a walking tour in which local residents serve as volunteer guides, showing visitors around Kanazawa from a uniquely local perspective.
Tours are held daily in Higashi Chaya District, and tourists can participate free of charge with no reservation required. Simply arrive at the meeting point at the designated time, and you can easily explore the area's main highlights in about one hour.

You can also join an approximately one-hour Kaga Hyakumangoku Walk tour at the Nagamachi Samurai Residence Site.
Nagamachi Samurai Residence Site is an area where many historic samurai residences remain standing. Kanazawa flourished as a castle town until the 19th century and was home to many influential samurai.
The samurai residences feature distinctive earthen walls and gardens, giving them a character quite different from the machiya townhouse architecture found in Higashi Chaya District and elsewhere. Guided by a local, you will spend about one hour visiting well-preserved residences, cobblestone streets, and a historical museum.
