Kanazawa Spring Attractions

Collaboration of Traditional Streetscapes and Cherry Blossoms

After the cold winter passes and the sunshine becomes warm, Kanazawa spring offers attractions throughout the city. Here, I've picked out particularly charming points that I especially recommend. If you're wondering what time of year to visit, please use this as a reference!

In Kanazawa, where the charm of a castle town remains, you can enjoy the collaboration of cherry blossoms in full bloom and traditional streetscapes when spring arrives. In atmospheric tea districts and other areas, you can fully experience the beauty unique to Japanese spring.

Kanazawa city has many cherry blossom viewing spots, and you can enjoy spring from various angles, from delicate cherry blossoms blooming by the water to dynamic rows of cherry trees.

At popular tourist spots like Kanazawa Castle Park, night cherry blossoms are illuminated, creating a fantastical atmosphere.

The fact that any part of the city makes a beautiful picture is an attractive point of Kanazawa spring.

Traditional Events Held Annually

Participating in events unique to this season is also one of the pleasures of Kanazawa spring. From March to May, many traditional events that have been passed down from ancient times are held, such as the gorgeous and magnificent "Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival," Kanazawa's largest festival, and the "Otabi Festival," where floats parade through the town.

Participating in festivals together with local people is an attractive point where you can learn more deeply about Kanazawa's charm. Events featuring traditional crafts such as "Kagayuzen" and "Kutani Ware" are also recommended.

Please enjoy the lively festival atmosphere in the comfortable Kanazawa spring climate. We'll introduce notable events in detail later, so please check them out!

Various Activities to Enjoy in Mild Climate

In the warm and comfortable Kanazawa spring, you can also enjoy outdoor activities. To fully enjoy spring nature, how about trying hiking or horseback riding? Experiencing dynamic fishing in the Sea of Japan is also recommended.

There are also parks with various athletic equipment on specially maintained mountain paths, which can be enjoyed by everyone from children to adults.

My recommendation is taking a rickshaw tour around the city. You'll make interesting discoveries different from walking around, and you can further immerse yourself in the atmospheric Kanazawa cityscape. If you rent a kimono and participate in traditional dress, your mood will definitely be elevated.

Exquisite Foods at Their Peak in Spring

In Kanazawa from March to May, you must not forget about the various exquisite gourmet foods that reach their peak in spring. While Kanazawa offers various seafood throughout the year, spring is the delicious season for Japanese needlefish, rockfish, flatfish, and others.

Not only seafood, but mountain vegetables and bamboo shoots are also unique pleasures of this season.

Additionally, Kanazawa is known for having the highest consumption of Japanese sweets in the nation, and in spring, gorgeous and beautiful Japanese sweets line the storefronts. Many feature seasonal flowers like cherry blossoms and peach blossoms, and these spring-like Japanese sweets can be enjoyed visually as well. Please also enjoy special menus that can only be tasted during this period at Japanese-style cafes and restaurants!

Enjoy Cherry Blossoms in Kanazawa Spring! 5 Recommended Tourist Spots by the Author

City Bloom (forecast) Full bloom (forecast)
Kanazawa Late March Early to mid-April

Generally, when 5-6 flowers bloom on a single cherry tree, this state is called "blooming," and when about 80% of the flowers have bloomed, it's called "full bloom." Since cherry blossoms bloom earlier in regions with higher temperatures, the best viewing season moves from south to north across the Japanese archipelago.

Cherry blossoms in Kanazawa typically bloom around late March each year, with most cherry blossoms reaching their peak from early to mid-April during the beautiful Kanazawa spring season.

Here, as someone who loves Kanazawa's cherry blossoms dearly, I have carefully selected tourist spots I want to visit during this Kanazawa spring period. Please check out the recommended points as well!

Kanazawa Castle Park

Kanazawa Castle Park, which is also a symbol of Kanazawa, is a popular spot known for its cherry blossoms. The collaboration between the dignified, towering Kanazawa Castle and the cherry blossoms in full bloom overflows with Japanese sentiment during Kanazawa spring.

The park has about 400 cherry trees, and you can enjoy several varieties of cherry blossoms including Someiyoshino and Yamazakura, which is an attractive feature. The trees bloom in full splendor surrounding Kanazawa Castle along the stone walls and around the entrance gates.

During cherry blossom season, there's also nighttime illumination, allowing you to enjoy fantastical night cherry blossoms. Since the nights in early April when the blossoms are at their peak can still be a bit chilly during Kanazawa spring, please dress warmly with a light jacket or coat!

Kenroku-en

Located almost in the center of Kanazawa, Kenroku-en is a popular spot that has been selected as one of "Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots." Within this "strolling garden" where you walk and explore the vast grounds, about 420 cherry trees bloom magnificently during Kanazawa spring.

With approximately 40 different varieties of cherry blossoms that bloom at slightly different times, you can enjoy viewing them for an extended period, which is an attractive feature. Among them, the "Kenroku-en Kiku-zakura" is a rare variety nationwide, and many people visit specifically to see it. The blooming period is relatively late, from late April to early May, and as it progresses, it changes from deep pink to light pink, and finally to white. Please enjoy this beautiful Kiku-zakura that can only be seen here during Kanazawa spring.

Asanogawa Bridge

The area around Asanogawa Bridge, where atmospheric tea houses line up, is also a popular cherry blossom viewing spot that many people visit during Kanazawa spring. The collaboration between the cute arch-shaped Asanogawa Bridge and cherry blossoms gives off a somewhat retro atmosphere.

While it's nice to stroll leisurely along the riverside walkway with its magnificent cherry tree-lined path, my recommendation is cycling with a rental bicycle. Racing refreshingly under the cherry blossoms while feeling the spring breeze during Kanazawa spring will make you feel exhilarated.

Rapeseed flowers also reach their peak at the same time as the cherry blossoms, and you can enjoy the vivid contrast of pink and yellow, which is an attractive feature.

In early April, the "Asanogawa Garden Party" is also held, where you can watch traditional performing arts on a stage above the river. Please check it out during your Kanazawa spring visit!

Mount Utatsu

Mount Utatsu Park, located about 20 minutes by car from Kanazawa Station, is a scenic cherry blossom spot beloved by local residents during Kanazawa spring.

The "400-Year Forest," where the valley between mountains is completely filled with cherry blossoms, has about 350 cherry trees planted, allowing you to enjoy the rich natural scenery surrounded by mountain trees. Different varieties of cherry blossoms such as Someiyoshino and weeping cherry have slightly different hues, creating a pink gradient, which is an attractive feature.

From the well-maintained "View Hill," you can overlook the townscape of the Higashiyama area and around Kanazawa Port. There are also benches, so it's recommended for resting when you're tired from walking during your Kanazawa spring exploration.

People who want to enjoy the rich natural spring scenery should definitely visit.

Kanazawa Municipal Athletic Field

Source:Kanazawa Tourism Official

Kanazawa Municipal Athletic Field is a historic stadium that will celebrate its 100th anniversary of opening in 2025.

About 100 cherry trees are planted surrounding the stadium, and the stadium interior is opened to the public free of charge from early to mid-April during Kanazawa spring. Many citizens visit every year, spreading leisure sheets and bringing food to share with friends, or strolling leisurely and taking photos, enjoying the cherry blossoms in their own way. The colorful combination of cherry blossoms, track, and blue sky is perfect for Instagram-worthy photos during Kanazawa spring.

My favorite way to spend time is to take out food from "CHICKEN PRINCE," a fried chicken specialty store near the stadium, and have a picnic. How about enjoying cherry blossom viewing with spicy fried chicken and beer in hand during the beautiful Kanazawa spring?

5 Recommended Tourist Destinations in Kanazawa to Enjoy in the Cheerful Spring Weather

Here, I've picked out my recommended tourist destinations to visit under the gentle spring weather. These are all spots where you can fully experience Kanazawa's charm, including places that retain the traditional atmosphere characteristic of Kanazawa and beautiful beaches.

Higashi Chaya District

"Higashi Chaya District" is a tea house district where "Machi-ya" buildings from the late Edo period (1820) remain. "Machi-ya" refers to buildings that integrated shops and residences where townspeople lived.

The beautiful streetscape with continuous stone pavements has an Edo period Japanese atmosphere and is a popular spot that cannot be missed when sightseeing in Kanazawa.

In cafes that utilize the Machi-ya style, you can enjoy matcha and traditional Japanese sweets. When I guided friends from overseas, they really loved the traditional craft "Kaga Yuzen" dyeing experience. The nighttime streetscape with its beautiful warm lighting is also a must-see.

If you want to enjoy the gorgeous tea house district with gourmet food, experiences, and shopping, please visit!

Kazue Machi Chaya District

Kazue Machi Chaya District is a tea house district that developed around 1869 during the Meiji period. Along the narrow alleys that continue along Asano River, atmospheric tea houses and restaurants that retain the charm of old times line up. There are also hidden bar-like establishments, characterized by an adult atmosphere.

My recommendation is the nighttime hours when it's illuminated by the gentle light of paper lanterns. In spring, it becomes a fantastical world together with the night cherry blossoms along the river.

Compared to Higashi Chaya District, Kazue Machi Chaya District has a quiet and calm atmosphere and is recommended for those who want to stroll leisurely. Both are close to each other, so please visit both!

Chirihama Beach

"Chirihama Beach" is Japan's only driveway where you can drive on the coast. This beach, which has also been selected as one of "Japan's 100 Best Beaches," is popular as a spot where you can see spectacular sunsets.

Since it's possible to drive with normal tires, motorcycles, and bicycles, I also recommend enjoying cycling with rental bicycles. The exhilarating feeling of running along the water's edge in the cheerful spring weather will become a wonderful memory of your Kanazawa trip.

My favorite way to spend time is to park the car by the sea and gaze at the ocean absent-mindedly from inside the car.

Near the driveway, there's also "Furue Construction Weeping Cherry Garden" where weeping cherry blossoms bloom magnificently, so please visit there as well!

If you want to enjoy beautiful cherry blossoms, I also recommend visiting cherry blossom spots around Kanazawa

In surrounding areas not far from Kanazawa, you can also enjoy beautiful cherry blossoms from early to mid-April. Here I've picked out cherry blossom spots in Kaga City and Komatsu City. Please enjoy them together with Kanazawa's cherry blossoms!

Kakusenkei Gorges

Source:Welcome to Kaga no Kuni

"Kakusenkei Gorges" in Kaga City is a gorge of Daishoji River that flows through the hot spring town. It's about 1 hour and 10 minutes by bus from Kanazawa Station. A walking path of about 1.3km is maintained, and "Sakura Park" along the walking path is a popular cherry blossom spot.

My recommendation is "Kawadoko" that can be enjoyed near Ayatori Bridge. "Kawadoko" refers to seats set up one level higher than the ground right next to the river where you can taste local dishes. At Kakusenkei's Kawadoko during this time, you can enjoy cherry blossom viewing while tasting tea and Japanese sweets. Please spend an elegant spring moment listening to the murmuring of the river and the chirping of birds.

Rojo Park

Source:Komatsu City

"Rojo Park," located about 20-30 minutes by bus from Kanazawa Station, is one of the leading cherry blossom spots in Komatsu City. The park where about 130 cherry trees bloom is bustling with local people who spread out sheets and leisurely enjoy lunch boxes and drinks.

The park is designed as a maintained garden style, where you can enjoy the atmosphere of waterside with waterfalls, ponds, and streams. My number one recommended spot is "Sakura-Ike Pond." The cherry blossoms in full bloom around the pond reflect in the waterside, creating a beautiful water mirror.

The attractive point is that there are sights to see other than cherry blossoms within the grounds, such as art museums, museums, and tea rooms.

After sunset, you can also enjoy night cherry blossoms illuminated by the gentle light of paper lanterns. It's a homey cherry blossom spot beloved by local people.

For those who want to learn deeply about Kanazawa's history and traditions, participating in guided tours is also recommended. These tours, where you visit various tourist spots while listening to explanations from local guides, allow you to efficiently enjoy Kanazawa's charms in a short time.

My recommended highlights include walking through back alleys not found in guidebooks and hearing stories unique to local guides. You can also enjoy Kanazawa gourmet food, such as local cuisine lunch at Kenroku-en and matcha & Japanese sweets at Higashi Chaya District.

To enjoy exquisite seasonal foods during Kanazawa spring, first visit Omicho Market!

Omicho Market, with its 300-year history, has long been beloved by locals as "the kitchen of Kanazawa citizens." The market, lined with approximately 170 stores, offers fresh foods such as seafood, meat, vegetables, and fruits, as well as sweets, flowers, and clothing.

There are also restaurants where you can eat seasonal seafood from early morning, making it perfect for enjoying breakfast. My recommendation is the various handmade prepared foods made in-store. You can taste freshly made exquisite Kanazawa gourmet dishes such as crab rice, fried oysters, and gas shrimp tempura.

Some stores even allow you to bring in ingredients purchased at the market and prepare them in your preferred cooking style. Please enjoy shopping while asking staff about seasonal recommendations.

Seasonal ingredient to enjoy at Omicho Market during Kanazawa spring: Sayori

Sayori, which reaches its peak season when cherry blossoms are in full bloom, is also called "Hana (flower) - Mi (view) - Uo (fish)." With its slender body and distinctive face, it's said to be the beauty of the fish world.

With its refreshing taste and chewy texture, it's eaten as sashimi or tempura. My recommendation is fresh Sayori that has been dried overnight. When grilled, it pairs well with beer or sake.

Please try spring Sayori, which is high in protein, low in calories, and rich in vitamin C.

Seasonal ingredient to enjoy at Omicho Market during Kanazawa spring: Mebaru

When it comes to spring seafood, Mebaru cannot be forgotten. In Kanazawa, it's also called "Hachime," characterized by its vivid vermillion color and large eyes.

While it's often prepared as simmered or grilled dishes, fresh ones in season are recommended as thinly sliced sashimi. The firm, chewy flesh offers a light and elegant flavor. Eating it with refreshing ponzu soy sauce is my favorite.

Miso soup, which draws out rich umami in the broth, is also recommended.

Seasonal ingredient to enjoy at Omicho Market during Kanazawa spring: Bamboo Shoots

When it comes to Japanese spring ingredients, bamboo shoots are also popular. The Uchikawa district in the southern part of Kanazawa City is known as a bamboo shoot production area, where you can also enjoy bamboo shoot digging experiences.

From late April to mid-May, freshly dug bamboo shoots line up at Omicho Market. Kanazawa spring bamboo shoots, which grow slowly under snow during the cold winter, accumulate natural sweetness and are characterized by having little bitterness and a fresh, juicy texture.

Please enjoy various bamboo shoot dishes such as tempura, seasoned rice, and clear soup!
