restaurant Published: Nov 14, 2025

Kanazawa is a city famous as one of Japan's leading cultural cities since the samurai era. Even today, it is known for its many historical and traditional spots.

Kanazawa is also a gourmet city.

My number one recommendation for enjoying Kanazawa gourmet is COIL (Seafood), a sushi restaurant where you can experience making your own hand-rolled sushi.

In this article, I will introduce several restaurants in Kanazawa where you can enjoy seafood gourmet, focusing on the appeal of COIL (Seafood) and the reasons I recommend it. I will also introduce seafood bowl restaurants and markets, so this is a must-read for anyone who wants to enjoy seafood gourmet in Kanazawa.

Kanazawa offers various exquisite gourmet options, including fresh seafood

Kanazawa, known as a gourmet city, has so much exquisite food that you cannot eat it all in one trip.

For example, there are local cuisine and Japanese sweets. Kanazawa, known as an old city with a long history, has a rich culinary history. Even from a national perspective, Kanazawa has many dishes that are popular with both locals and tourists.

The most famous is seafood. This is because the waters off Kanazawa have excellent geographical conditions, making it a rich fishing ground where delicious fish thrive. Kanazawa is very famous for dishes using delicious fish caught locally.

From here, I will pick and introduce my recommended shops that are perfect for enjoying seafood cuisine.

For enjoying exquisite seafood in Kanazawa, COIL (Seafood) is recommended!

COIL (Seafood) is a modern creative Japanese cuisine restaurant recommended for those who want to "experience" traditional Japanese food culture. It is an experiential restaurant where you can make "thin-rolled sushi" yourself, compare different types of Japanese tea and sake, and do more than just taste the food.

Additionally, it is the perfect place to experience traditional Japanese and Kanazawa cuisine, including tempura and Monaka soup (a soup where ingredients are placed inside a shell made from rice cake called Monaka, and you break the Monaka to extract the ingredients).

I will now introduce in detail the shop's attractive points and recommended menu items.

A sushi lover explains the appeal of COIL (Seafood), which is famous for its unique cuisine!

You can make rare "original hand-rolled sushi" that is uncommon even in Japan

The most unique point of COIL (Seafood) is that you can experience making thin-rolled sushi yourself. You shape it yourself using a traditional Japanese tool called a bamboo mat, which is sheet-shaped and made by weaving bamboo with thread.

Surprisingly, the amount of force is difficult to control - if the force is too weak, it falls apart, and conversely, if you apply too much force, it gets crushed. The time spent trial and error aiming for the ultimate sushi is very enjoyable, and the sushi you made with your own effort is more delicious than sushi from any high-end restaurant.

Hand-rolled sushi is often made in Japanese homes. When I was a child, my family would often make it together on special days such as long holidays and consecutive holidays. COIL (Seafood) is the perfect place to experience Japanese food culture.

You can finish it to your preferred taste with carefully selected exquisite ingredients

At COIL (Seafood), you can choose your favorite ingredients from over 50 carefully selected ingredients. The choices are diverse, from standard sushi seafood such as tuna, salmon, and salmon roe, to meat such as roast beef and soy-simmered beef, and even unusual menu items such as natto, kimchi, and avocado.

Since all ingredients are carefully selected, you will not regret whichever you choose. Incidentally, my recommendation is the combination of sashimi such as salmon and shiso leaves. The accent of shiso leaves brings out the deliciousness of seafood.

You can experience not only hand-rolled sushi but also SELF TEA CEREMONY

At COIL (Seafood), not only hand-rolled sushi but also comparing Japanese teas is an attractive point.

Many Japanese teas carefully selected by the shop owner are available, including sencha, gyokuro, and Kanazawa Bocha. You choose the ones you are interested in from among them and search for your preferred tea while brewing the tea yourself. Japanese tea has completely different colors, aromas, and flavors depending on the type. By comparing multiple Japanese teas, you can feel the complexity and delicacy of Japanese tea, which is also an attractive point of SELF TEA CEREMONY.

Also here, the fact that you can experience brewing tea yourself, not just enjoying the deliciousness of tea, is an attractive point that is characteristic of COIL (Seafood).

When you come to COIL, these are the must-try items! The author's 3 recommended menu items

PREMIUM DISH (Reservation only)

PREMIUM DISH is a luxurious set that contains all the charm of COIL (Seafood). Of course, it includes thin-rolled sushi and SELF TEA CEREMONY, as well as high-quality fish nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) soup, large shrimp and vegetable tempura, and hojicha ice cream as a set.

I particularly love the shrimp tempura. It's very thick and meaty, and you can feel the wonderfulness of Kanazawa, the seafood city.

The contents of the thin-rolled sushi are also very luxurious. The highest quality ingredients are carefully selected, including wild duck, shrimp, eel, sea bream, tuna, and Japanese black beef.

While each has a very distinct flavor, they also have a gentle taste that creates harmony with other ingredients. Please try various combinations and aim for the ultimate sushi experience.

Coil's selection SET

What I want to recommend most at COIL (Seafood) is the Coil's selection SET. It's a hand-rolled sushi set with 6 plates of ingredients, combined with tempura.

The 6 plates of ingredients in Coil's selection SET are an assortment of popular ingredients at COIL (Seafood). It includes crab, salmon roe, negitoro (minced tuna with scallions), salmon, perilla leaves, and roast beef. Just hearing about this lineup makes you hungry, doesn't it?

Since it's a combination loved by many customers, it's guaranteed to be delicious. This is recommended for those who feel there are too many ingredient options and can't decide on their own!

- Price: 2,430 yen

8 dishes + Tempura

8 dishes + Tempura is a set plan where you can enjoy hand-rolled sushi with 8 types of ingredients of your choice.

The attractive point of 8 dishes + Tempura is that you can make sushi to your own liking.

You can choose from a rich selection of over 50 varieties.

You can choose many sashimi varieties to make classic hand-rolled sushi, or select unique options like avocado & basil tartar to create original hand-rolled sushi. It's all up to you. No matter what you choose, it's guaranteed to be delicious, so feel free to create sushi that's uniquely yours.

Sushi that only you can make will surely become the best memory.

- Price: 2,580 yen and up
- Note: Comes with 4 sheets of vinegared rice, choose 8 types of ingredients you like

"Vegetarian Plate With Tempura" is also available for vegetarians and those who are not fond of seafood

The last recommendation I want to make is the Vegetarian Plate With Tempura. It's a lineup that avoids meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy products. Depending on the course, it includes bell peppers, cucumbers, perilla leaves, avocado, stir-fried mushrooms, and more. It's a hearty lineup, so you'll be very satisfied.

You can choose from three options: 5 types, 6 types, or 8 types of ingredients. The compatibility between avocado and vinegared rice is the best and it's my favorite, so I recommend the 6-type or 8-type course that includes avocado.

- Price: 5-type set: 2,380 yen / 6-type set: 2,500 yen / 8-type set: 2,880 yen

Kanazawa Night Foodie Tour is a tour where you can fully enjoy Kanazawa's food culture while visiting 3 restaurants.

After enjoying traditional Japanese-style course cuisine, you move to a restaurant serving "oden," a traditional Japanese hot pot dish, and finally, savor dessert at an izakaya where you can enjoy matcha and Japanese sweets. This is recommended for those who want to broadly enjoy Kanazawa's food culture.

Additionally, the movement from restaurant to restaurant takes you walking through the historic samurai district townscape. Being able to enjoy the traditional streetscape, pleasant night breeze, and feeling of fullness all at the same time is an attractive point unique to this tour.

"TILE," where you can create your own original seafood bowl, is also recommended!

"TILE," where you can create your own original seafood bowl, is also recommended!

TILE, the sister restaurant of COIL (Seafood), is also one of my recommended establishments. TILE is a restaurant where you can create your own original seafood bowl. You can choose 5 to 8 types of your favorite ingredients from 30 varieties.

At TILE as well, the ingredient variations range from seafood like tuna and nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), to meats like roast beef, and unique options like grated yam and tako mayo (octopus with mayonnaise).

When you come to TILE, what I really want you to order is the Boiled rice in tea set. If you leave a little rice behind, they'll add warm broth to make it into boiled rice in tea. When I ordered it, the gentle flavor of the broth and its warmth permeating my body was truly blissful.

Also, one attractive point is that TILE offers set menus that don't use meat or fish.

4 Spots to Enjoy Authentic Seafood in Kanazawa

Omicho Market

Omicho Market

Omicho Market is a historic market that has supported the lives of citizens for over 300 years. With 170 stores packed tightly together, it sells a variety of daily necessities including fresh fish, vegetables, fruits, meat, sweets, and clothing.

My recommended way to enjoy Omicho Market is to first walk around the market area, experiencing the atmosphere of a Japanese market and enjoying shopping.

Then, when you get tired from walking, head into one of the seafood restaurants. There are dreamlike establishments such as those serving seafood bowls with sashimi piled so high it overflows from the plate, sushi where the fish is so large you can't see the rice underneath, and shops that grill tuna right in front of you. Please enjoy the seafood cuisine until you're completely full.

Otome Sushi

Otome Sushi

Otome Sushi is a representative sushi restaurant of Kanazawa where even making a reservation is difficult.

Otome Sushi's menu basically consists only of omakase (chef's choice). Because they discern the most delicious fish of the day and serve only that, the quality and taste of the ingredients are at the highest level. Everything is well-marbled with fat and has a melt-in-your-mouth flavor that remains unforgettable even months after your visit. Leave everything to the fish professionals and have the ultimate experience.

Additionally, Otome Sushi has a selection of delicious sake. Please enjoy the tastes of Kanazawa with the combination of seafood and Japanese sake.

Komatsu Yasuke

Komatsu Yasuke

Komatsu Yasuke is a renowned restaurant that any sushi lover should visit at least once. Every day they discern fresh ingredients, and the craftsmen bring out 120% of the ingredients' appeal with delicate seasoning.

The seared tuna belly (aburi toro) is especially exquisite, and the moment it enters your mouth, the umami melts and spreads throughout your entire mouth.

At Komatsu Yasuke, everything from preparation to serving is done at the counter right in front of you. All the movements are beautiful, and it's sometimes even called the "Yasuke Theater." From the moment the sushi is formed to when you eat it, everything is solemn and extraordinary, multiplying the appeal of the cuisine.

It's a place where you can enjoy the highest quality sushi in an elegant and comfortable space.

Sushi Kibatani

Sushi Kibatani is also one of Kanazawa's representative sushi restaurants. The restaurant was created by renovating a traditional house over 100 years old, and its charming atmosphere where you can feel the warmth of wood is attractive.

Sushi Kibatani's philosophy is not just to rely on the fish's natural flavors, but to add the optimal touch of effort for each ingredient. The craftsmen's techniques bring out the fish's potential by drawing out umami with salt and sake.

Furthermore, at Sushi Kibatani, the non-sushi menu items are also an attractive point. They bring out the appeal of fish through various cooking methods such as simmered octopus and seared yellowtail. Sushi Kibatani is recommended for those who want to fully enjoy the abundant food of Hokuriku.
