Shinto is the indigenous faith of Japan which is based upon the worship of nature, ancestors, and ancient heroes. It was the state faith from the Meiji Restoration of 1868 until the end of World War Two in 1945. Come join and experience the ways of Shintoism in this unique tour made by an actual priest who will be the tour guide for this experience.

Take a lecture on Shinto from a guide at the museum of Shinto University “Kokugakuin University”

We will gather at JR Shibuya station south exit and head for the Kokugakuin university museum. Kokugakuin University is a university in Shinto, where there is a museum that shows comprehensive history of Shinto along with archeology and economic history. It is a place that is not well known to tourists so it is a great hidden spot. From the designs and tools used in the Jomon era, you can learn and feel the ways other cultures were incorporated. What kind of way did Shintoism have reached Shinto today? How did the Japanese's life change with that? The Kokugakuin university museum is excellent as a historical museum with such shintoism

Experience real shinto ritual at Konno Hachimangu

Shibuya's guardian, Konno Hachimangu is a shrine in the residential area of Shibuya, boasting a history of nearly 1,000 years.

It was erected when Shibuya was not a city like now and still a small small village, and it is a venerable shrine that gained great support from the Tokugawa family during the Edo period. Even now, it is a very local shrine that is loved by people living in Shibuya for a long time. It is the guardian of Shibuya area, and is not a touristy place.

This shrine is located in a quiet place where you can not imagine being in the big city of Shibuya. It will surely make you feel strange that this kind of place suddenly appears in this huge city.It is a place full of greenery and makes you feel calm.

The precincts of the shrine is not that large, but it is made up of five buildings including the main shrine, the stage for a traditional dance called "No", and shrines dedicated to other kinds of kamisama.

Shrine Ritual Experience

In this tour, you can explore the inside of a shrine where you usually do not have the opportunity to get inside. You can experience a real shinto ritual since this shrine is not a shrine for tourists.

If you want to experience the shinto ritual, you need to donate 5,000 yen to the shrine. But if anyone in your tour is experiencing it, it is possible for other people to go inside and see the shinto ritual.

Of course I, who is a real priest, will explain about the ceremony and the meaning. The special & unique part of this tour is you will have permission to take pictures of the people who are experiencing the shinto ritual. Taking a photo of shinto ritual is usually prohibited.Although you have a special permission to take pictures, it is necessary to follow various rules since shrine is a sacred place. I'm acquainted with the various rules so you don't have to worry.

We will send the photo data to you after the tour. Hope it will become part of good memories in your trip.

I think this is the only tour that offers real shinto ritual experience and shoots the photo of it in Japan.

Draw a Fortune

When you have finished experiencing the shinto ritual, let 's draw out a Omikuji. This is a traditional Fortune paper in Japan. On Omikuji, your fortune and what to watch out for is written. I will explain what is written on it. You can bring it back as a souvenir or you can put it in the precincts of the shrine like Japanese do.

After that, we will walk back to Shibuya station and the tour will be over. (If you chose the option to wear the Kariginu, the actual priest costume, we will move to another shrine)

Creator of this Experience

Originally, I worked as a PR and advertisement professional in one of the leading advertising agency in Japan. However, after being obsessed with the charm of Shinto, I resigned from the company and went on to study Shinto, acquiring the qualification of a priest. I am now serving as a priest at several shrines and researching about ancient Japanese language "Yamato Kobotoba".

The shrine headquarters, which is the general organization of Shinto, expresses the shrine as "Japanese Faith" instead of "Religous".Yes, indeed. Shinto has a unique way of thinking that distinguishes it from other culture. I would like to tell you about its charming points. I can guide the shrine while lecturing about Shintoism, which tends to be difficult and abstract, in a easy-to-understand way. Since I am a priest, it is possible to provide the experience of shrine ritual held in the shrine too.I am also providing a tour in Shibuya to understand about Shinto deeply.

I can also guide you to enjoy the traditional festival as much as possible.(Did you know that Japanese traditional festival "Matsuri" is organized by the shrine?) If you are interested in Shinto underlying in the Japanese culture, please contact me.By understanding the way of Shintoism, next time when you visit a shrine during a trip to Japan, you will definitely have a different feeling.
